This year has been fun, fast and full of fantastic events! The children have participated in many creative and exciting projects and excursions. The activities on offer were endless, and the 6th class children soaked up every opportunity.
As school leaders, the children assisted the school in many different capacities. Their leadership proved to be aligned with the School Values and a great example of maturity in their senior years. In Term One, the children signed up for many in-school clubs where they committed to fulfilling their duties as leaders of the school. The children that chose to be a part of the Sewing Club selected their patterns to embroider on a pillow, guided by the dauntless Mrs. Donald and Mrs. Layton. Several of the other clubs very quickly filled up and the children were very busy at recess, lunch and after school. A special mention to the inaugural Garden Club monitors who lead the way, with Mrs. Green, in setting up what has now become a huge part of the John Colet community. Their tireless work has set the tone for many years to come.
In Term Two debating kicked off and the freshly minted debating team worked closely with Mrs. Gaffney to prepare for each debate. The Maths Challenge began and the mathematicians eagerly began their work. STEM was also introduced and the children jumped at the opportunity to try something new. Open Day was the highlight of the term. The children worked hard to get the classroom ready and had a chance to shine on stage in singing and ensemble. The Shakespeare Club also showcased their drama skills.
In Term Three we trooped off to Canberra. We visited many iconic attractions such as Parliament House, The War Memorial and the Glassworks. The children greatly enjoyed the visit, but the highlight of the trip was visiting Questacon where the children investigated the Lego exhibition and explored the museum. Term Three brought NAIDOC Week, Science Week and Book Week which were bittersweet, as it was the last chance for the children to engage in all the fun activities. Preparations for Shakespeare were full steam ahead with rehearsals, costuming and refinement of dramatic pauses for one final performance. Another bittersweet moment.
Term Four came and went like a whirlwind as the children wrapped up any loose ends and enjoyed the many wonderful final moments; Shakespeare, 6th Class Stalls, the Graduation Lunch, and the School guard of honour. The spectacular Graduation Dinner, held at Mahratta was a lovely way for the children to express their gratitude to their parents for their love and support on their journey at John Colet. Throughout the term, the children were engaged in writing many articles for the Eagle Eye alongside visiting their prospective high schools for orientation days. There was never a dull moment!
Throughout this time they remained steady, focused leaders of the School, setting a precedent for the years to come.
Teaching this group of children has been a wonderful experience and we walk away with many fond memories of the past two years. It has been rewarding to watch them grow into young people ready to spread their wings and take flight into the next chapter of their education. We wish them all the best and remind them to please come back and visit us here at John Colet.
