From our P&F

We are on the final furlong and I feel exhausted just looking at all the wonderful events happening this term, which will be over in a blink of an eye!
This Monday is the final P&F for the year so do come along.  The majority of the discussion will be setting the scene for 2019.  Then our AGM is being held the following Monday 5th November at MoMokko Japanese Restaurant in Glenrose – time to be decided.

Trivia Night was a lot of fun and despite the torrential rain and thunder storm doing its best to discourage us, 50 parents, teachers and friends formed teams to do battle of the minds, and tables judging by the wonderful spreads they brought.  Upon arriving and seeing the questions (but not the answers!) I decided it best for me to retreat behind the microphone and not embarrass myself trying to answer them!  This worked well as it freed the team I was supposed to be on not to listen to my ramblings and win!!!  Our huge thanks to Jenny Pittar for organising this wonderful social event and to all the parents who braved the weather to attend.  I would also like to thank The Entertainment Guide and Athlete’s Foot Warriewood for their prize donations.  Our plan is to do it all again in Term 1 of 2019 so if you missed out this time don’t worry – you can come next year.

Don’t forget the JCS Sailing club has started and will continue Saturday mornings in Balmoral at 8:30am, weather permitting.  Please see elsewhere in this newsletter for details on how to join us.

The next P&F meeting will be on Monday 29th October.
I think that covers everything, enjoy your weekend and I will see you around the school.

Cheers
Niki

From the P&F

What a wonderful day we had on Sunday.  It is a great opportunity for the John Colet community to come together and show what we can do as a collective.  The classrooms all looked amazing, the children’s performances were brilliant, the stalls gave us such wonderful food and entertainment and we were blessed with glorious autumnal weather.  It is the only day the whole school gets together as an extended family and it’s a great chance for us parents to catch up too. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces, some of whom have moved on.

Of course this day wouldn’t be possible without the myriad of help that happened behind the scenes prior, during and after the event.  A big thank you to all the parents who staffed a stall and helped make this happen.  With particular thanks to the following individuals for their assistance in creating a wonderful Open Day…

Lucy B for her tireless work behind the scenes pulling the whole event together and making it happen.  These will be big shoes for somebody to fill next year – but your systems and processes will make the task a little easier!

School parents Abi T, Christabel L-R, Stacy L, Dilpreet K, Debbi C and their team of Lower 1st Parents for their donation of ingredients and days of dedicated service in preparing huge batches of delicious Asian Street Food for sale as part of our lunch service on the day.

French Café team headed up by Gaya G and Lydie L, we asked for more this year and you kindly stepped up and delivered. We love our French food!

Cake baking and decorating competition:  Libby L and Melinda J for their co-ordination of such a magnificent competition  - read about the winners further in the Weekly Note.

6th Year for their fun, interesting and varied games!  We loved them all!  And to the many parent who signed up on the doodle calendar to help on the day.  Your help is what makes Open Day so special.

A big thank you to the administrative team who put in many hours work before, during and afterwards to making the day the success it was – Belinda James, Alex Coubrough and Christine Condos.  Thanks to all the teachers and teachers’ aides for the wonderful classroom displays.  To Mr Miller for the beautiful singing, Mr Roslin and students for a find fencing demonstration, Mrs Emanuel for the brilliant Shakespeare performance.  To Mrs Donald for coordinating the sewing club's display and last but not least to Mr Aldo and his team of helpers for setup and taking down the equipment.

Hopefully you can enjoy a relaxed Sunday this week … next stop – the Barn Dance!!

Kind regards
Niki & your P&F Team

From the P&F

Once again the Masquerade Party showed how the small but perfectly formed John Colet Community came together to raise money for the solar panels.  We made a sizeable dent in the funds required by raising over $18k, which combined with the Walkathon money gets us to around half way towards the $42k target.

The evening was a fun and social affair with past and present parents and friends of John Colet.  Indu B started the evening off by singing a prayer and John B did a brilliant job as our MC and Auctioneer, keeping us in stitches with his humour.  Mrs Dunn and Mrs Renshaw gave heartfelt speeches of thanks to  Mrs Donald and Mrs McKendrick and their replies were warm and humorous.  The P&F presented them with gift vouchers for afternoon tea at Gunners Barracks.  Of course an evening like this is not possible without the army of helpers who have been working hard behind the scenes for the last few months.  Jenny P, Tony M, Glen M, Lucy B, Verity El, Julie  L, Cherry H, John B, Indu B, Lucas V de S, Fred H, Rachel J, Carty H, Denise C, Claire S, Christine E, Cheryl Lynn F, Annette Gadsby, Julie Allcorn, all our wonderful Class Parents, Julian Wilcock and Alex Coubrough.  I sincerely hope I have not missed anybody out.

In addition on behalf of the school I would also like to thank our sponsors who donated items for us to auction.
Anne Sergeants Netball, The Attribute Group, Australian Skin Clinics/G Family, B Family, Bauer Media, Belrose Bikes, B Family, Bunnings Warehouse – Belrose, Camp Australia, C Family, ClassikON, Energise Health Club – Belrose, Evolve Tennis Academy – Belrose, Exquisite Car Hire/Whiley Family, Flip Out Brookvale, Flower Power – Terrey Hills, Glenrose Beauty Therapy, Integrated Wellness / G Family, Kinetic Education / S Family, LOLL, Mary Layton, Manly United Football Club, M Family, Michael Zanetti Photography, M Family, Number Works N Words, Omlet, Perform Physiotherapy / S Family, Pittwater Golf Centre, Tooth Sparkler Family Dental / M Family, Verve Photography and the W Family.

A huge thanks to all those who generously bid on auction items, enabling us to raise such a large sum.

Let’s do it all again in a couple of years!!

Umina Camp 8-10 December  - The P&F invite all John Colet families to join us for a relaxed weekend of family fun at the Umina Ocean Beach Holiday park. This is a wonderful gathering, that started off as a few friends getting together the first weekend of the summer holidays and has grown to a much larger event. It is organised by Claire J  so talk to her for more information.

Trivia Night Cancelled – this is just a reminder that we will not be holding the Trivia night in November – instead it will be held in Term 1 2018.

Have a wonderful weekend

Kind regards

Get your masks ready!

Hello Parents
You should by now have received your invitation to the JCS Masquerade Party, SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER at the Checkers Resort and Conference Centre.  With only 4 weeks to go – make sure you book your tickets and reserve your seat on your table of choice.  First out of the blocks are U1stM in the lead with almost a full table and a second one ready to go, L1stB and the School Executive are hot on their heels and 6T are close behind.  Years 2 & 3 and 4K and 5CD have yet to reach the starting line J  Let’s see how the leader board changes over the course of this week!

https://www.trybooking.com/298221

If you have any questions about the evening or tables (they seat 8-10) please drop me an email and I will be happy to help you.

The evening promises to be a lot of fun and a chance to catch up with your friends and alumni at John Colet.  There will be a photo booth to get some silly photos with your friends and a disco to dance the evening away.  Of course there will be silent and live auctions happening during the evening and we will be giving thanks to Mrs Donald and Mrs McKendrick for a lifetime of service to John Colet.

A huge thank you to the volunteers who are making this all happen.  I have been blown away by the wonderful help and support that has been offered.  Verity Earl is doing a sterling job approaching numerous businesses for auction items. Sonja Clement, Rachel Jones and Libby Levey are also approaching businesses for auction items too.  The class parents are doing a great job putting together some very desirable hampers / gift bags.  Julie Laarman, Carty Haverhals and Tereza Berkemeier are helping with decorating the room.  It was a member of Cheryl-Lynn’s team that designed the invite and is helping with other artwork.  Cherry Hopley set up Trybooking and will help set up on the day as will Denise CattMel Armstrong-Jones, Andrew Earl and John Brogden will be helping on the night.  There is always room for more help with obtaining items to auction – so if you would like to help let me know and I can tell you who we have already approached.  If anybody is interested in helping to photograph and write up the auction items for our catalogue I am all ears J.

Children’s Mask Decorating Competition
We thought it would be fun for the children to be involved by running a Mask decorating competition, there will be prizes for Primary and Infants and the masks will be used to decorate the room on the night.  Masks for decoration will be sent home with the children next week and a leaflet emailed home with more information on the competition.

This week’s Auction Items Spotlight – Children’s Activities
  • Manly United FC – 2 spots at their September School Holiday camp and a signed player’s shirt
  • Netball Camp – 2 days school holiday camp
  • Tennis – Evolve Tennis will be donating some time in their holiday camps
  • Number Words N Works – Mona Vale & Dee Why -  A term’s maths/English tuition
  • My Kids Art – we are hoping to secure holiday spots for here
If you know of any other children’s activities you can approach that we can get to donate please let us know.
Please contact your class parent if you have any questions and they can forward them to me.
Lastly, a  reminder that the next P&F meeting is Monday 21st August at 7:30pm

Have a great weekend.

Many thanks

Niki

It's going to be a ball!

Editor's Note:  Since this article was posted, the date of the Masquerade Gala Dinner has been changed to Saturday 9th September. The venue is Checkers Conference Centre on Mona Vale Road, Terrey Hills.

Can you help us with the next big JC P&F event -  the Masquerade Ball Gala Dinner on Friday 8th September?  At this stage we are looking for volunteers to help form small groups / committees to look after the various aspects of the evening.  Here is a list of helpers required.

  1. Silent Auction Manager/s:  This person(s) will co-ordinate the collection of the silent auction items.  This person(s) will also be responsible for the setup of these items at the venue on the day.
  2. Live Auction Manager/s: This person(s) will co-ordinate the live Auction of the large items that may be worth a significant amount.  This person/s will also take down the names of the winning bids and their owners.
  3. Graphic Designer / Artist?: This person will design the invites and all other artwork associated with the event as well as working closely with the Live Auction Manager to arrange the layout and printing of the catalogue and any special signage we may require.
  4. Money Collection: This person will be responsible for collecting money on the night and using the eftpos machine when required.
  5. Table Decorations/Theming:  This person/s will help to create and co-ordinate the table centres for each of the tables.
  6. Children’s Artwork: Co-ordination of the Children’s artwork to be auctioned on the night.
  7. Raffle ticket sellers/lucky dip: This bubbly person/s will co-ordinate the raffle and the lucky dip on arrival.
  8. Live Auction: Auctioneer.  This person will be responsible for hosting the bidding for the live auction.  (Do we have an auctioneer amongst our midst?).

If you are able to do any of these roles or you would like to form a group to help co-ordinate these activities, please let your class parent know.

Best wishes,
JCS P&F

From the P&F

I trust this finds you well.  Last week we finally had sufficient sunshine to hold the events that had been postponed in Term 1.  Here is a roundup of what has been and what is to come!
  • Hot Cross Buns – this may seem a dim and distant event, it raised over $300, a huge thank you to Manjula G for making it happen, to the admin staff who helped behind the scenes and the parents and children who helped get the buns out on the day!
  • Walkathon – it turned out to be 3rd time luck for our annual walkathon!  In fact the change of date was a blessing in disguise as it was a much better temperature for the children to walk round in and future walkathons will be held at a similar time.  Money raised for this (and other events) will go towards the Solar Panels that will, in the long term, help reduce the school’s energy bills.  A big thank you to Cherry H who organised the event and to all the parents who turned out on the day to help – we couldn’t do these events without you. Please send your child’s sponsorship money in ASAP – preferred method is by bank transfer with the following reference WALK Class/es Kids Surname as the reference e.g. WALK 6T 5CD Hopley
  • Movie Night – went down a treat too, there was very little spare grass to sit on due to the turnout.  Again the change of date (although a little chilly) was more suitable for the younger children to attend as with the time change we could hold it earlier.  Although this is more of a social than a fund raising event we managed to raise $230 which is great.  A big thank you to Ray Burquest, Toni Cleaves, Kresho Sprem, Mr Aldo and the school’s administrative staff who worked behind the scenes to make this happen!
  • Cyber Safety Talk – Thursday 1st June – 6:30pm – will be at the school - for parents only - this is a great talk on cyber safety by an external specialist and highly recommended to attend
  • Open Day – Sunday 28th May -  Doodle Calendars will be released soon for each family to donate time to helping on the day
  • Gala Dinner – Friday 8th September – don’t forget to put this date in your diary – more info coming shortly – if you have any ideas or suggestions for items we can auction please send them to me (via your class parent if you don’t have my email)
  • Shakespeare Costume Help – We urgently need somebody or two people to volunteer looking after the Shakespeare Costume room – in essence it is receipting the costumes and accessories when they come in and returning them to their correct place within the room.  More details are elsewhere in this newsletter.  If you think you may have time to help please contact your class representative to contact me.
  • Minutes of the P&F Meeting  - minutes of the meeting held on 1st May have been circulated – you should have received them from your class parent by now
  • Next P&F Meeting – Monday 19th June

I think that wraps it all up.  Do keep an eye on this newsletter and emails from your class parents for the upcoming Open Day – there will be calls to help /action and we really appreciate your prompt response.
Thanks
Niki

From the P&F

Hello – we had another good meeting with a great exchange of information at the P&F meeting held on Monday – the next meeting will be Monday 3rd April.  There are a few calls for help this week as follows:

Shakespeare Costume Person Required – Roya A will be taking up study commitments later this year and needs to hand the responsibility of looking after the wardrobe over to another person.  Roya will be available to show you the ropes during the Infants festival.  If you have a reasonable amount of time you can give and are a fairly organised person this could be the role for you.  If you think you might be interested or want to know more contact your Class Parent and they can pass your message onto Roya or myself.

Gala Dinner – Auction Items Required & date changed to Friday 8th September – due to a change of venue we have had to change the date.  We would like everybody to put their thinking caps on for Auction Items as this will be the main way we raise funds.  Suggestions were – Art works / paintings, donate an “experience” e.g. degustation dinner, boat trips, holiday homes, headmaster for a day to name but a few.  If anybody has something they can offer or have suggestions for auction items please forward them to your class parent or myself.

Movie Night – 1st April – 6th Year are currently surveying the students a short-list of movies to find out which one will be viewed on the night.  As far as timing goes this is the proposal – Gates Open at 5:30pm, movie starts at 7pm – all done by 9pm.   For those of you who have not been before this is a great opportunity to meet and catch up with other parents in a relaxed and child friendly environment.  The children love the fact they are at school after hours and not in uniform and run around having fun with their friends before the movie starts.  It’s a great social and family time as we all gather under the stars to watch the movie.  I really do recommend you come along.  We will announce the movie as soon as we know it.

I think that’s all for this week – have a great weekend looks like it’s going to be a dry one!

Kind regards
Niki T

From the P&F

Hello – I hear Wednesday's Swim Carnival was a lot of fun and that we have to wait until assembly on Monday to find out which House won the Swimming Carnival – the suspense is killing me!

Movie Night – Saturday 1st April
I would like to thank Emmie C for volunteering to organise this year’s Movie Night.  We will start to get more details to you as the week rolls on.  A selection of movie choices has been given to Year 6 to go around the school and get votes from the other children on as soon as the movie is chosen we will let you know what it is.

GALA DINNER – CHANGE OF DATE to FRIDAY 8th September
Please note that we have had to change the date for the Gala Dinner as our preferred venue didn’t have the original date available.  Don’t forget to change this in your diaries and book your babysitters now – we are just starting to plan it out and already it looks like a fun evening – more information to follow in the coming weeks, particularly help/ideas for items for the auction which will be the main fund raising part of the evening.

P&F Monday 6th March – 7:30pm-9pm
The second P&F Meeting of the year is this coming Monday at 7:30pm in the school.  Do come and join us – we love to hear your input.

The Walkathon will soon be upon us – don’t forget to get sponsorship for your children and come along on the day if you are able – the children have such a fun afternoon.  Details of the Hot Cross Buns drive will also be announced in the school newsletter.

I think that’s all for this week – have a great weekend and hopefully it’s not too soggy!

Kind regards

From the P&F

Hello – Did you get the email for the Swimming Carnival Permission slip that came out earlier this week?  WOW wasn’t that easy to use – very impressive.

If you are reading this before the Board of Governors Meeting tonight, do come along and say hello to your P&F committee who will be there on the night.  Many classes are having their parent’s information evening, so why not drop by afterwards.

Volunteers make all our lives easier and enable the P&F and School to achieve so much more.  I would like to thank Cherry H for volunteering to organise this year’s Walkathon.  Class parents will have received an email from Cherry this week with information about the day, this will be passed along to parents in each class.  I would also like to thank Manjula G for volunteering to coordinate the hot cross bun drive again this year.

Movie Night – Saturday 1st April
After much thought we have decided to scale this back to its original format of being purely a movie night.  The pizza idea was a great suggestion, but logistically was proving a little challenging.  I am very grateful to Ray B and Kresho S for volunteering to put together the technical side of the evening (getting the movie up and running - rather crucial to the evening!)  However we are urgently looking for a volunteer to coordinate Movie Night.  This would involve coordinating the logistics (picking up the hire equipment, organising pop-corn and drinks to be sold, collecting the entrance donation and liaising with the school).  We will work closely with you so please don’t be afraid – if you do think you would like to help or would like further information let your class parent know and they can pass your contact details onto me.

I hope to see you at the Board of Governors reception tonight!

Kind regards
Niki T

Wonderful Walkathon ahead

Walkathon 2015 17 smaller

The school walkathon is the first big event on the P&F calendar for 2016! The walkathon will take place next Friday March 18th  at 1:30pm on the Wyatt Avenue oval opposite the school.

As well as being a successful fundraiser, the walkathon is designed as an enjoyable afternoon for all involved.  I would encourage all parents and friends to come along and cheer on our walkers!  Your support will make a difference!

For the benefit of Lower First and families new to the school, the walkathon works as follows:

  1. A sponsorship form will be included in the weekly newsletter over the following weeks.
  2. Each child is encouraged to gain sponsorship pledges from family and friends either on a ‘per lap’ or a ‘one off’ basis.
  3. On the day of the walkathon, parent volunteers from each class record your child’s laps.  (Class parents will be in touch)
  4. You will receive your child’s lap tally result the week after the walkathon.
  5. The school holiday break is used to collect your pledges.
  6. We accept cash or cheque (made out to John Colet P&F) or direct deposit.
Please deliver all money raised to the office by the second Friday of Term 2.

The P&F looks forward to a successful and enjoyable day.
