Parents' Roster: How you can help at Open Day

A few reminders, some gentle and some not so gentle...

Roster
Make sure you put yourself on one of the Rosters!  Thank you to all those who have.
We are looking for at least one hour per family.  Remember first in best shifts!  If we don’t get sufficient volunteers by Wednesday we will need to look to a conscription model.

We are being very brave and bold and trialling a new roster model via doodle.   Having tried conscription, allocation and volunteering with mixed success we are going to give this a go.  Below are five links to doodle schedules.  Please include your name, mobile number and email when you register your interest.  Once we have the polls completed the task co-ordinators will contact you with more information.

Please note there will be no tasks allocated between 10.00 – 11.00 to ensure all parents can watch the performances.

Week Prior - This coming week
Roster to help in the week leading up to Open Day.  We know from previous years that helping on the day for some parents can be difficult due to other commitments, young children etc.  We also understand these same people are keen to contribute.  Taking that feedback on board we have identified some useful tasks.

The tasks in this poll includes:

·         helping with signage and ticketing etc.  The poll is suggesting from 8:30 – 10.30 for this task.

·         Set up on Saturday from 11.00 am – 2.00 pm

o   Fill umbrella bases

o   Set up tables and stalls

o   Decorate school

P&F cake stall, what to bake

Open Day 2015 CAKE STALL

This is a very popular stall at the Open day and it is a fun and delicious way of raising money for the school. We would very much appreciate it if each family could provide one (or more) home made goodies for the stall. The goodies will also be used for morning tea supplies in the hall.

Some suggestions are:

-      cakes

-      biscuits

-      slices

-      banana breads

-      fudges

-      muffins

-      cup cakes

-      mini quiches and other savoury items.

Gluten free and vegan items are popular so would be very much appreciated. We will be sending home a cake box and a couple of small ziplock bags, If you would like additional packaging materials (or cake bases for round cakes) they will be available in the breezeway in the week before open day in a plastic box marked “cake stall” (separate to the cake competition).

It is important that each item is CLEARLY LABELLED WITH ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS. Please remember that all items are to be vegetarian and NUT FREE.

Please deliver all items to the Cake Stall upon arrival at the Open Day. We will be in the parking area between the office and the hall. Thank you very much for your support!

Back to school! Much happening behind the scenes at P&F. 
Open Day activities are well underway. Our thanks to the staff at school for coordinating the event this year. Parents will see more from Lucy B shortly.  
Our chess club is going from strength to strength, with the remarkable Simone Pietschner pulling a champion teacher out of her hat in Miro's absence. 
The walkathon ran smoothly as usual. Please remember to send your money in. May W deserves a round of applause for coordinating the event this year.
We are organising a school community getaway in December. Come one, com all! See the full page flier later on. Clare J is looking after this.
And for those who like to get out and about with discounts, the Entertainment Book (all online) is available through school.

Get ready for our next Buy/Sell/Swap day - first week back Term 2.

 

We have received a some larger sized uniforms (boys and girls) and have loads of smaller sizes.
If you need a back-up sports shirt or shorts, you should be in luck! 
 
If you have anything gathering dust in the back of the wardrobe, give it a soak - especially collars and cuffs - and pop along! Any summer uniforms that have been outgrown? Bring them in - swap them and save on your time spent sorting and packing away - a win win situation!

From the P&F Corner

The movie night was quite perfect. With around 40 families cosily ensconced in sleeping bags, vegan sausages on the BBQ, and a general atmosphere of joy, How to Train Your Dragon 2 took us to new heights of....something good. Special thanks to coordinators Linda and Laurie Z, BBQ-ers Marija and Kresho S and Chandra B, and tech support Jason C and Ray B.  

Our very own City to Surf, aka 'The JCS Walkthon' is just around the corner, with the kids ready to do lap upon lap of the oval on Friday 20th March. All funds raised will be put towards blackout curtains for the classrooms (~$14,000). The sponsorship form is available at the end of this newsletter. This is the only school fundraiser planned at this point, so please don't hold back.

Camping Weekend: Save the Date!  Some families have enjoyed wonderful camping trips over the years with other families at the school, and so the P&F are planning a camping / cabining weekend, open to all John Colet families, on 12-13 December 2015.  More details in next week's newsletter!

I believe the last P&F meeting went very well. Christine Condos's taking of the pause deserves a special mention. Sorry I missed it!

Our new Vice President, Vik D, has hit the ground running with some new initiatives. He is working with the school on a LinkedIn group for parents. You may well see an invitation soon. Our new Secretary, Clare J, is leading the charge on an initiative to build our own understanding of our school parent community. Movie Night - Sat 7th March

Movie night is back by popular demand. The P&F are starting the year with a relaxed summer evening together under the stars. Linda Zanella and team are getting the sound system organised for (drumroll......) How to Train a Dragon 2.

Those who came for the previous movie night will vouch for a relaxed evening on a picnic blanket and in sleeping bags.

Entry by gold coin donation. Movie starts at 7. Gates will open earlier. Venue is our very own JCS garden.

The new year has begun and we have started with the priorities that were identified in the 2014 survey. The survey had 85 responses. There are 130 families in the school.
1. COLA: Outdoor learning area is in discussion with school
2. Community: focus is on engagement of families in 2015. It is a year of significant change at JCS and the motto to inspire us as the school reaches 30 years is "Love our School". Fundraising events will be limited.
3. Lunch: The school menu provides our children with the required nutrition as evidenced by the external audit in 2014. Copies are available from the office or P&F on request. We have requested the school to minimise providing children with "plain" options unless they have dietary requirements! 
4. Gifted & Talented/extension/special needs: in discussion with school

5. Open Day: format to contain parent workload and improve reach to potential new families in discussion with school
 
Keep in touch with us so that we can do our best to represent the parent body at JCS.

Walkathon time soon

Friday March 20th 2015, 1:00pm – 3pm

The school walkathon is the first big event on the P&F calendar for 2015! The walkathon will take place on Friday March 20th at 1:00pm on the Wyatt Avenue oval opposite the school.

As well as being a successful fundraiser, the walkathon is designed as an enjoyable afternoon for all involved. I would encourage all parents and friends to come along and cheer on our walkers! Your support will make a difference!

For the benefit of Lower First and families new to the school, the walkathon works as follows:

  1. A sponsorship form is attached to the back of this newsletter and will be included in the weekly newsletter over the following weeks.
  2. Each child is encouraged to gain sponsorship pledges from family and friends either on a ‘per lap’ or a ‘one off’ basis.
  3. On the day of the walkathon, parent volunteers from each class record your child’s laps. You will receive your child’s lap tally result the week after the walkathon.
  4. The school holidays is used to collect your pledges.
  5. We accept cash or cheque (made out to John Colet P&F) in an envelope with your child’s name and class clearly marked. We ask that you do not use the direct debit facility for walkathon funds.

    Please deliver all money raised to the office by the second Friday of Term 2.

The P&F looks forward to a successful and enjoyable day.

It begins again. Welcome to 2015, everyone. A special hello to all the new families who have joined our community this year. The P&F is here to build the school community and to assist in the provision of resources to the school and students. 

Our first meeting is just around the corner on Monday 2nd Feb, from 7.30pm in the staff room. Satiate your curiosity and come along. We will be discussing the 2014 parent survey, marketing support, open day and other things. If you would like to discuss any matter, please contact me and we can pop into the next agenda.
