Chess Competition report

On Wednesday 8 students from John Colet School’s Senior Chess Class competed in the Local Heat at Curl Curl North Public School of the Sydney Interschool Chess Challenge, which is run by the Sydney Academy of Chess.

For some of the children it was the first tournament of this type that they had ever attended.   There were 96 students competing from 9 schools. Each child had to play 7 timed matches which started at about 9.30am and went through till 2pm, when presentations were made.  All of the children experienced winning, losing and drawing! The team brought a high level of enthusiasm, manners and attitude representative of what we are all about at John Colet!  The competition was of a very high standard!  8 year old Thomas J from 4th class lead the charge for John Colet with a very impressive score of 5.5/7, meaning that he only lost one match the whole day.  He earned himself a Medal for coming first from our school and only just missed out on receiving a trophy which was presented to the top 5 performers.

On 4.5/7 points Mi Mi P  turned in an impressive performance coming in the top 23 players on the day and the 2nd best performance from a girl in the tournament.  We were a little bit unlucky, in that twice Thomas was drawn to play fellow JCS team members.

If there had been a trophy for best-dressed Chess Team then we would have won it in our new Polo Shirts, which the kids were very excited about wearing.  In between matches the children enjoyed going to the school canteen, playing hand ball and hula hooping that’s right!  Being a member of the Chess Club is a lot of FUN!

Next week we will do it all again with a further 8 students, who will go to the heat at Artarmon PS.

I d like to thank Aidan H’s mum, Helen who helped with the transport and a long day of supervision.

Yours in Chess, Simone P
