On Wednesday 22 March, 111 children organized in 37 teams of three from seven schools around the Northern Beaches played at Mona Vale Public School in the Northern Beaches Chess Teams Challenge. Mona Vale, the hosts, are a very strong Chess Club and the Northern Beaches Schools are historically very competitive when compared across Sydney. John Colet took four teams, three from our Senior Chess Class plus one Girls Team. All of the children played seven chess matches.
Special thanks to Mariana P who remained with the children throughout the day and other proud parents assisted with driving and attending the tournament, Narelle E, Marea M, Chetana H, and Sonja C.
Our John Colet A team was captained by Thomas J (6T) on Board 1 and supported by Saurav H (5) and Ramakrishna B (5). They came 3rd overall on 15.5 points. Notably Ramakrishna won 6 out of his 7 matches, with his only defeat coming from the winning Team Mona Vale A.
The John Colet B Team was Captained by Leo P from 4K and was supported by Eshaan H (5) and Kai C (6T). Up until their final round they were only 1 point behind the A Team, and were very unlucky to be drawn against a very strong Team from Wheeler Heights, therefore finishing their tournament with a very strong 12 points.
The John Colet C Team was captained by Siddhartha B from 3rd class supported by Edward T from Year 5 and Aidan H from 6T. They had a great day, finishing in 6th place Overall and with 13.5 points. Siddhartha had a particularly impressive run, only losing one match outright, drawing one and winning all his others to give him 5.5 points.
The Girls team was captained by Victoria M from 4S and supported by Amelia G from year 5 and Jasmine E from year 2. Jasmine was representing the school for her first time and showed great maturity. With 10 points they tied in 2nd place and narrowly missed out on a Medal to a team from Mona Vale.
