Last night I had the pleasure of attending the end of year concert put on by the children who learn musical instruments at school. I was struck by the number of children who performed and the variation in pieces. Music is a fundamental aspect of education here and even if children don t learn a specific instrument they are taught music notation and they sing twice a week. The results of this over time are obvious in the quality of singing that we hear at Open Day and Speech Night. There is much research to show the beneficial effect music has on other areas of learning. Plato is said to have made this comment about music It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.
