Last week we all had fun creating wicking beds to take home. What is a wicking bed? It’s a veggie box that waters plants from the bottom, needing very little water. We used polystyrene, where we layered plastic, then gravel, soil, manure, mulch, then seedlings. PVC pipe was embedded into a corner, with a hole to drain water out.
This is where the water goes and then it ‘wicks’ up through the gravel and soil layers to the plants. Ingenious!
Theresa showed the children how to do it and each child took home a box of seedlings to care for.
Over the past few weeks we’ve put in two new garden beds and filled them with seedlings. Our little JCS garden is growing…
