We begin Term 3 with a school wide focus on the Value of Courage. The word courage stems from the Latin word cor which means heart. The heart is a muscle that needs to be constantly used and likewise courage needs exercise otherwise it deteriorates. Initially we are linking this value with the concept of Truthfulness, which we explored in Term 2.
Being honest, ignoring gossip and standing up when you know that something is not right takes courage. It requires of the children a decision to take the harder choice, outside their comfort zone, as it is not a passive response. Fostering a courageous mindset empowers our students and in combination with our other Values gives them the tools in which to make informed choices that are to the benefit of all.
You learn courage by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging. – Mary Daly
