Latin is offered at John Colet, both in the Infants and Primary, and is of great benefit for all sorts of reasons it teaches grammar, language skills, thinking skills, etymology, history, mythology and so on.
Senior Latin 5th and 6th Class
For many years the School has taught Latin formally to 5th and 6th Class. These Senior Latin Classes take place three times per week during the usual school teaching hours; and we teach the Oxford Latin Course. The criterion for entry into these older classes is the successful completion of the School’s Spelling programme.
In addition to this, two years ago, as a pilot programme, the School experimented with opening up Latin study to the younger grades. In 2013 and 2014 Mrs Donald held classes for the Upper 1st and 2nd classes; and Mr Mane did the same for the primary grades. The details of these additional classes in 2015 are as follows:
Infants: one half-hour lesson per week before school at the following times:
- 2nd Class: begins in Term 1 on Wednesday mornings from 8.10-8.45 in Colet 1.
- Upper 1st: begins in Term 3 on Tuesdays from 8.10-8.45 in Colet 1. This class is still to be selected.
The maximum practical class size is 12. Anyone who wants to join these classes can do so; however they really need to be able to read and write fluently; and, ideally, be a solid speller. And regular attendance is required. If you are interested for your child please speak to your class teacher and we can take it from there.
Primary (3rd and 4th Class): One combined class for children from these grades
Meeting on Tuesdays at 1.05-1.35 (Lunch Play time) Room to be advised.
If sufficient numbers of children turn up we will consider forming a second class.
Anyone who wants to join these classes can do so; however they really need to be able to keep up with the work, and again, attend regularly. If you are interested for your child please speak to your class teacher and we can take it from there.
