Lower First News (Kindy)

Deputy Head of School Comment

This week I would like to acknowledge the excellent service that has been offered by our 6th class students. Each morning there are a number of enthusiastic children waiting to take our new Lower 1st class to their classroom and help them with their bags. In some cases, they have waited with them in the classroom if they need an extra bit of help with settling in for the day. On Friday morning some 6th class students came to Infants Assembly to sit with Lower 1st and help them negotiate their very first school assembly. Their care, enthusiasm and good example has been outstanding. That afternoon they had their first Buddies session which will be a regular Friday afternoon …

Back into a busy Third Term for 6th class

Children’s authors Jackie French, Daniela Abela and Andrew Daddo shared creative writing tips with 6th class in a Mini Writing Festival this week. The children were keen to put into practice creating vivid descriptions, building curious characters and developing plot. In other matters, the busy-ness of school has resumed with buddies (who celebrated 101 days of school dressed as the 101 Dalmations), Shakespeare, French and debating. Congratulations to our debaters who won today’s debate against Ravenswood School for Girls! On Monday we had our Teacher’s Day assembly and the children heard several short readings about the sun, moon, Earth, sky, water and air; and contemplated what they could teach us. For Romeo and Juliet, ‘costumes’ will be basic blacks …

Getting smarter every day in Lower 1st

One hundred and one days of learning, and counting!  Lower 1st loved their celebration of being ‘101 Days Smarter’ on Thursday this week.  They all dressed up as the 101 Dalmatians, but Cruella was nowhere to be seen!  Thanks Miss Cipollone and and Mrs Cooper for planning such a delightfully doggie day, with at least 101 fun activities ranging from writing 101 words, counting 101 objects in groups of ten (plus 1) and making dalmatian masks with their 6th class buddies. More photos are on our Facebook page.   …

Big steps in Lower 1st

In Lower 1st, we are encouraging the children to come into the classrooms on their own at the start of the school day. We are encouraging them to be independent by hanging up and unpacking their own bags and coming into the classroom or walking to the playground. The letters we looked at this week were Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx and Yy. In Science we constructed 4 different types of clouds (cirrus, stratus, cumulus and cumlonimbus) using cotton wool.  Our buddies helped us with this activity.  in Maths we looked at different words for subtraction: take and away and minus.  In History we talked abouty Aboriginal dreamtime stories and how we pass stories from one generation to another generation.  …

Some things we did this week in Lower 1st

In Lower 1st (Kindergarten) this week we learnt about the sounds and shapes of the letters Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss and Tt.  In writing, we wrote about our weekend, using our sight words.  In maths we did addition of numbers 1 – 10.  In science we are learning about clouds.  History lessons have been discussions about how families differ.  In comprehension we have been considering different directions.  And at buddy time, which is our favourite part of the week, the 6th Class Art Monitors planned a lovely lesson for us to do with our 6th class buddies. Simone Cipollone Teacher …

The fun and learning in Lower 1st so far!

Lower 1st have been learning about the letters aA, bB, cC, dD,eE and writing our name.  In maths, we have been singing number songs, counting forwards and backwards and looking closely at the numbers 1 and 2.  In Science, we discussed where we belong in the world (Australia) and how weather differs depending on where we live. We’ve had a big focus on class routines and class rules, manners and being a good friend, and this all fits in well with our ongoing discussions about our School Values. In Art, the children created artworks reflecting the Year of the Rat for Luna New Year, using crayons, paint, scissors and glue. Today in buddy time they made valentines cards for …
