Eight of our budding authors and illustrators from 6th class had an amazing day this week at the Children’s Book Council of Australia Lunch with the Stars! The event was held at The ICMS in Manly, providing the perfect backdrop for imaginative ideas and creative discussions about writing stories.
With 19 Australian authors and illustrators to meet, we had a busy day and enjoyed every minute. John Flanagan (author of The Ranger’s Apprentice series) was the keynote speaker and Serena Geddes (illustrator: well known for her Belinda Murrell books) led an illustration workshop for all the students.
Almost 20 local schools were there and each group had the opportunity to have lunch with one of the authors or illustrators. John Colet students sat with Susanne Gervay, an author passionate about writing meaningful and thought provoking stories for children to help them with big issues like bullying, difference, war and peace. She has written a lovely picture book called Elephants have Wings which she feels aligns so beautiful with our school’s philosophy. She very much enjoyed speaking with our children about courage and peace in our world.
