Music
Music: All the children sing several times each week. We have three choirs: Infants, Primary and 4th, 5th and 6th class children can audition for the John Colet Choir.
The repetoire is selected for its
beauty, challenge and fine quality
Music plays a central role in the life of John Colet School. Our repertoire has included a wide variety of works, from adapted choruses of Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Mozart’s Magic Flute, to contemporary pieces by Australian composers such as Paul Jarman, including Ancient City, performed with our School Orchestra.
As part of their music education, children take part in two dedicated singing sessions each week, develop skills in music reading and notation, and are given the opportunity to play a musical instrument. All students sing in year groups, and from 3rd Class they begin learning the recorder and percussion instruments in their class music lessons. In 5th Class, students are introduced to the art of composition using GarageBand, giving them a hands-on experience of creating their own music.
Beyond the classroom, students can extend their skills through participation in the John Colet Choir and School Orchestra, with rehearsals scheduled before or after school. Also, children participate in Performing Arts Festivals and Eisteddfods and there are two instrumental performance evenings each year.
We also offer private instrumental lessons during school hours with experienced musicians, available from Upper 1st Class. Lessons are offered in flute, guitar, piano, violin, and viola.
