Third class thoroughly enjoyed yesterday’s History excursion to West Head. We couldn’t have asked for better weather to spend a day outdoors enjoying the bush and learning about Aboriginal connections to Country. The children participated in a number of hands-on activities and learned many interesting facts about Aboriginal culture and traditions. The excursion also informed the work we are currently doing in English – Dreaming stories – as well as in Art. Today the children started writing a recount about their experience. Photos from the excursion have been shared on Class Dojo.
The Maths focus this week was two-dimensional shapes. When discussing the features of 2D shapes, we looked at parallel and perpendicular lines and we learned how we can show that an angle is a right angle. We learned about regular and irregular polygons, and explored quadrilaterals, understanding that there is a subgroup that are called parallelograms. The children learned many mathematical words this week and they are always encouraged to use the correct vocabulary when explaining their reasoning for choosing particular answers.
In English we continued working with sentences and practising adjectival phrases. We read Mad Magpie, a Dreaming story about how to deal with bullying and anger, discussing the author’s choice of words. Next week we will look at examples of compound sentences from this text and explain that the coordinating conjunctions ‘but’ and ‘yet’ are used to show contrast. We will also read another Dreaming story and identify connections with Mad Magpie.
